Ross DeBardelaben is founder and director of Miami Virtuosi, a small business providing professional musicians for concerts, special occasions, and music instruction. He enjoys a varied career as a performer, teacher, and music businessman. Ross is principal second violin for Miami Lyric Opera and a member of the Miami Symphony viola section.

A native of Miami, Ross started playing viola in the 4th grade through a music magnet program in public school. Recognized for his talent, he was awarded private viola lessons by a local music club in the 6th grade. His first private viola teacher was Polish violinist Dr. Mischa Poznanski, who played a Stradivarius violin alongside Ross for their two years of lessons together instilled in Ross a rich sense of tone, expression, and phrasing. Ross commenced viola studies with Pamela McConnell, professor of viola at the University of Miami when he was in the 8th grade. He earned his Bachelor’s in Viola Performance at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music as recipient of the Wilda Tinsley Moennig Honors Scholarship. After Vanderbilt, Ross was violist in the Graduate String Quartet at West Virginia University. He moved to New York in 2000 where he completed the Master of Fine Arts in Viola Performance at Purchase College (SUNY) Conservatory of Music. During his time at SUNY, he was the violist in the Graduate String Trio, the Linden Trio.

Between his Masters degree and Doctoral studies, Ross worked as a Management Assistant for iconic artist managers R. Douglas Sheldon and Mary Jo Connealy at Columbia Artist Management (CAMI) in New York City serving world-class artists including Mark O’Connor, the Eroica Trio, and Yundi Li among others. In 2005, after his stint at CAMI, Ross returned to his roots geographically and vocationally by resuming viola performance studies at the University of Miami as a graduate teaching assistant. He completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Viola Performance with a cognate in Music Business at the Frost School in 2012.

Since 2005, Ross has taught private violin and viola students in Miami. As a violin teacher, Ross focuses on the development of essential fundamentals of sound, musicianship, and technique for young violinists, from beginners through the intermediate advanced violin repertoire. As a viola teacher, Ross specializes in teaching viola for violinists and staples of the viola repertoire to advanced conservatory level viola students. Ross’s teaching and performance philosophy is informed by his extensive studies with a long list of performers/teachers including Pamela McConnell, Jesse Levine, Maria Lambros, Philip Tietze, Kathryn Plummer, John Kochanowski, Joey Corpus, and Burton Kaplan and masterclasses and lessons with Lawrence Dutton, Heidi Castleman, Victoria Chiang, Daniel Avshalomov, Kasuhide Isomura, Jeffrey Irvine, and Ralph Fielding among others. He studied at many summer music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival (CO), Encore School for Strings (OH), Portland String Quartet Workshop (MN), Sewanee Summer Music Center (TN), Garth Newel (VA), Magic Mountain Music Farm(NY), and the Latin American Violin Festival (Venezuela).
